The First Club Board

Mark Andrews of Inver Heights, Minnesota is the "father" of the Club Chess board. As a high-school Chess club coach/advisor, he wanted a more affordable design for a tournament-compliant Chess board done in leather that his school could afford to buy in quantities. The very first one I made was for him and is pictured here. Mark likes his Chess boards large, so he had me make this one with 2-1/2" squares.

Here, he has adorned my humble Club Chess board with an extremely fine set of Chessmen from The House of Staunton.

Spanish Pulpit

"The set is a traditional "Spanish Pulpit" design with gaudy faces (from Mexico). It's wood with cow bone carvings on top." ... "A marriage made in chess heaven!" - Daniel Navarro, Laredo, Texas

The Battle of Bannockburn

"I just wanted to let you know that the chessboard that you made for me arrived today and I could not be more pleased! I am so glad that I managed to buy one of your hand made boards before the rest of the chess world discovers what a fantastic value a truly great board from Katherine Louise is, as opposed to just a 'serviceable' board. I'm sure that when that happens you will be forced to raise your prices. I will cherish this board for many years and one day be proud to pass it down to one of my children." - Charles Kugler, Manitowok, Wisconsin

The set shown is the "Battle of Bannockburn" pattern with a plain finish, a representation of the conflict between Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, and King Edward II of England. The board is a custom 22" (2-1/2" squares) version of the Celtic.

1st Prize

Ornate Meets Minimalism

"It's really really beautiful. I'm so pleased with it - gorgeous! It's fantastic when a collaboration yields such a great result. Thank-you again for your willingness to work with me." - Phillip Low, New York, NY

The design for this board was Phillip's, resulting in a very nice contrast between the very ornate bronze Chessmen and the sparing, minimal design of the game board.

Custom Game Table Insert

"Carol and I couldn't be happier. Look at the attached photo and see for yourself. The board blends in beautifully with the table. No one would guess that the board is leather and the table, wood. You did a super job." - David Kunstler, Coconut Grove, Florida

Marriage is like a coconut...

For this game board, the customer wanted a special wedding anniversary gift for a couple she knows. It needed to have a coconut somewhere in the design; the noble coconut was presented to symbolize a strong marriage during their wedding ceremony. With the aid of some palm trees, I was able to take the symbolism a bit farther to come up with this design.
